Annual Awards Banquet

The PNSCA Annual Awards Banquet was held on Saturday, November 13th.  It was held at the home of Howard and Diane Johnson, and co-hosted by Steve and Gail Iverson.  It was a wonderful time, a great chance to get together with our racing friends, at a great venue (we all wish we had that much room to work), and the food was wonderful.  Thanks to everyone who put in all the hard work to make it happen.

Beautiful Custom Trophies

Special thanks go out to Ed Hauter and Jeff Yoder who made the gorgeous custom trophies.  This year, Jeff used his amazing metal working skills to create the top three trophies in the form of scoops.  They are quite simply stunning.  And Ed worked many hours to fashion the many individual race trophies as well as the awards for the rest of the PNSCA top 10.  It’s so great that we have such talented members who can create these keepsakes.

Bob Woodruff, 2010 Champion and Ed Hauter, PNSCA President

Our season champion, in another nail-biting contest that came down to the last weekend of the year, is Bob Woodruff.  Bob sealed his third consecutive PNSCA championship and his fourth in the last five years.  And as usual, Bob gave a wonderful heartfelt acceptance speech punctuated by the presentation of his beautiful champion’s jacket, a gift from his fiance Connie.  Congrats to Bob and Connie on another incredible year.

Finishing in second was PNSCA President, Ed Hauter.  Ed was in contention for the series championship up to the last weekend of the year, and despite a valiant effort in the last two races, couldn’t just quite take the stripe.  This is Ed’s second consecutive top three finish.

Rick Dearinger Collects for Third from Ed Hauter, with Connie Schmoll in the Background

Rick Dearinger also collected another top three finish and a beautiful third place trophy for his mantel.  Perhaps most amazing was the fact that Rick missed the first four races of the year and still managed to finish the year in third.  This performance shows what a formidable competitor Rick always is.

Dale Hrenko Checks Out the Hardware

This year’s Rookie of the Year was also named, and it was no contest.  Dale Hrenko had a wonderful first year in a long, skinny car finishing in sixth place in the PNSCA championship.  Dale won in Bremerton in August and made the semi-finals two other times during the year.  Dale is a tough competitor and this is surely just the beginning for his PNSCA career.

Thanks again to everyone who made the banquet such a success.  And special thanks to Pete and the folks at Power Punch for their continuing series support.  Look forward to another great year of racing in 2011.

Still Time to RSVP for the Banquet

Sad that the weather is turning, that winter is finally here?  Don’t mope around, wishing for drag racing weather, come to the banquet!  Talk racing with people you enjoy being with (OK, most of them anyway…).  Watch people get awards, maybe collect one yourself.  Win door prizes!

Where else can you spend a lousy $10 and get a meal and talk drag racing?  Your $10.00 buys a choice of a 12oz filet or a half a BBQ chicken with baked potato or rice pilaf.  So get off your duff and call Steve Iverson at 360 921-1042 and let him know you’re coming.

Season Finale Lives Up to Billing

As predicted, there was more than a little shuffling in the points at Woodburn this past weekend.  The top 10 was scrambled, and thoroughly.

Don Sefton Collects for Saturday's Win

The weather was wonderful all weekend, with clear skies and moderate temperatures.  But the racing was hot.  Saturday was won by Don Sefton, who had also posted a strong win last month in Bremerton.  Don beat PNSCA relative newcomer Jim Glenn in the final.  The race featured a charge into the semi-finals by Ed Hauter who entered the weekend with a mathematical chance to pull off a stunning come-from-behind and unseat two-time champ Bob Woodruff.

Yoder and Dearinger Face Off in Sunday's FInal

Sunday was another great day of racing.  Rick Dearinger won the race, charging from 5th in the points at the start of the weekend up into 3rd with the victory.  Rick defeated Brandon Yoder in the finals to take the win.  The semi-finals featured Dale Hrenko topping off a great first year in Super Comp with a strong showing, enough to move him into 6th in the points.  Ed Hauter ended the season in 2nd place in the points after bowing out in round two.

The points for the 2010 Power Punch Series are now final, and you can see the results on the Race Results page.  This took a couple of extra days to finalize as we needed a clarification in the rules.  After much research, it was recalled that the bonus PNSCA point for showing up at the race should be given, even when a race is dropped for the best 8 of 11 format.  This is the way it has been done in the past, and the programmer (yours truly) had not included that in the points calculations for the web site.  Oops.  But this is changed now, by awarding competitors who dropped races (Bob and Ed) a single point for their dropped races.

Bob Woodruff Get's the Three-Peat

Congratulations go out to Bob Woodruff for his convincing “three-peat” victory, wrapping up the PNSCA Power Punch series championship for the third year in a row.  And he did it in convincing fashion, ending the year a full 75 points (a semi-final) ahead of Ed Hauter in second.  I’m sure everyone joins me in congratulating Bob, and can’t wait for the banquet to raise a glass to him for his domination.  And then we’ll all get back to doing whatever we can to make sure he doesn’t “four-peat”…

As noted, the celebration banquet will be held Saturday, November 13th.  More details to follow shortly, but please make plans to attend and celebrate the great season of Super Comp racing we’ve had.

Season Finale Slated for Woodburn This Weekend

The PNSCA Power Punch Series will wrap up this coming weekend with the final doubleheader at Woodburn Dragstrip just south of Portland. As part of Woodburn’s 25th Annual Fall Classic, the PNSCA points race will come down to the wire.

There is plenty of room for movement in/out/among the top ten spots in the points chase. Last year, the top 10 finishers took home almost $4000 in combined cash. Please make plans to be a part of the excitement, and get your share of this bounty.

Also, we’re looking for ideas/suggestions/comments regarding an end-of-the-year banquet. Last year, we had a wonderful time at the Yoder/Bacon hosted event, and we’d like to have another this year. In the tradition of alternating north/south, we’d like to see something perhaps in the Tacoma area. If you have any ideas, suggestions, comments, recommendations, please post them at the thread in the forum (which you can find here) or simply add them as a comment to this post.  No need to register, just click on “comments” at the bottom of this post and put in your $0.02.

Let’s wrap up the PNSCA season with solid showing, so everyone please make plans to join us in Woodburn.  See you there!

Hot Weather and Hot Racers in Bremerton

It was a hot weekend in Bremerton, with temperatures well into the 90s. And there were a couple of very hot racers as well.

Don Sefton and Shelly, All Smiles after Saturday's Win

Saturday dawned hot, and it only got hotter and steamier from there. By late afternoon, several weather stations were recording 95. And it also was a good day for Don Sefton who systematically worked his way through the field to the win.

Saturday's Runner-Up Rick and Gladys Dearinger

Saturday was also a good day for Rick Dearinger, who missed the first couple of races of the year with engine issues, but rose to the occasion to make the finals.

All Smiles, Dale Hrenko Won His First S/C Race on Sunday

Dale Hrenko prepares to take out his first victim, Emily Williams

Sunday was not quite as hot, temperatures only reached the low 90s.  That little cooling off, however, was completely lost on Dale Hrenko who became certifiably hot.  Dale was deadly on the tree all day long, winning three of his four races on holeshots.  He recorded reaction times of .010,  .003,  .012, and .011 — an average of only .009.

Dale Hrenko and Bob Woodruff prepare for the Sunday final

The win was Dale’s first Super Comp win and comes in only his first year in the class. And to get there, he had to take out PNSCA Power Punch Series leader Bob Woodruff in the final, no small task.

Dale Hrenko (right) and Crew

Also having a great weekend was Chuck Linne, who made it to the semifinals both days. It was great to see Chuck with a spring back in his step, and going rounds.

Connie Schmoll and Bob Woodruff

By going rounds this weekend, series leader Bob Woodruff put more distance on the rest of the Power Punch Series field. Barring a complete meltdown in Woodburn, coupled with an impressive performance by Ed Hauter or Emily Williams, it appears that Bob is on his way to an unprecedented “three-peat” third consecutive PNSCA series title.

Please make plans to join us for the season finale doubleheader in Woodburn on September 10 and 11. See you there!

Morris-Bootsma Wedding

The Happy Couple

Congratulations to Andy Morris and Kacee Bootsma who were married yesterday, Saturday August 7 th at The Golf Club at Newcastle, on the Prestwick Terrace in Newcastle, WA.They were joined by nearly 300 of their friends and family with enough racers to have a great drag race.

The Awesome Groom's Cake

All of the racers and families of the PNSCA racers wish them a wonderful life. And some of us hope they have a nice long honeymoon that keeps them away from the track for a while… We need the points.

Cross-Border Fun in Mission

We had a fun weekend racing in Mission over the 4th of July weekend, and there were more than a few cross-border rivalries renewed in the process. USA vs. Canada was featured in the final on both days of the double header, and … USA came out on top both days.

Dearinger and Pople Set for Saturday's Final

Despite a modest turnout, a good time was had by all.  With the weekend being bracketed by the Woodburn divisional and the Seattle national events, as well as many being drawn to family 4th festivities, it was left to the real die-hard racers to make up the field.  But with a number of the PNSCA top ten not there, the opportunity to make up ground in the Power Punch Series was ripe.

Saturday, there nine cars entered going into round one of qualifying.  it was 4 Canadian racers and 5 from the US.  The final count was 4 and 4, as Emmett McKillop had engine trouble and couldn’t make the call. Several racers in the points chase lost first round: Ed Hauter, Emily Williams, and Tom Gresham. In the final, it was Mike Pople from Canada, and Rick Dearinger from Washington, with Rick going to the winners circle with the better .016 package.

Williams Got Her First SC Victory

There was a thinner crowd on Sunday as we had a couple of broken cars, and a few folks headed back to the US for 4th of July activities. Five racers competed, Justin Bond, Rick Dearinger, Tom Gresham, Mike Pople, and Emily Williams. Williams qualified #1 with an 8.91 and got the bye. Round one was Bond over Gresham, and Pople over Dearinger for the round two bye. Emily Williams beat Justin Bond on a red light to go in the final, and beat Pople on a double breakout (8.89 to an 8.88) for her first win in Super Comp. This moved Emily into third place in the season points chase. Ed Hauter moved around Bob Woodruff into first place.

Next race is a single day on July 24th back at Mission Raceway in British Columbia, Canada, during the NHRA National Open event.

Mission DoubleHeader This Weekend

The Power Punch PNSCA series heads to Mission Raceway for its first doubleheader at the track in years.  Mission is a racer-favorite track, and eight-time winner of the NHRA Division 6 Track of the Year award.  For more information on this great place to race, check out http://missionraceway.com

Racers will pay $55/day (CDN) to the track and, as usual, the PNSCA entry is $60/day (US) for members ($70 for non-members).  The track charges $20 (CDN) a day for camping on site.

If you’re looking for a tune-up before the national event in Seattle, this would be a great chance to get some laps in on one of the best tracks around.  And rumor has it that many of the top 10 in PNSCA points won’t be able to make it, so it’s a good chance to make up some headway in the Power Punch series.

So, it just makes sense to head to Mission this weekend.  See you there!
