Season Debut at Woodburn

It is May and finally the Super Comp Association is ready to race.  Off to Woodburn for the first of thirteen races.  The winter was long and wet, but the weather cleared up for the Saturday race. Fourteen racers bought into the event.  The event sponsor was Delta Camshaft.

Dale Green, Darral Petitt, Diane Petitt, Emmett McKillop, Josh Schmanke, John Theofelis, Mark Gillespie, Tony Arthur, Dave Thornton, Tom Bachand, Nick Shepherd, Alan Harland, Brent McKinney, and John Collecchi were the racers who signed up to race.

After two rounds of qualifying, Emmett McKillop was the #1 qualifier with an 8.900. Snap On tools provided the #1 Qualifier Award.

FBN Racing put a $100 bonus for the best package of the day. That was won by Dale Green with a .026 package. Thanks Dennis for the extra bonus.

After some delays with the track and all the extra classes, round one got started.  Darral Petitt put a hole shot on Thornton, McKinney also used a holeshot to overcome Diane Petitt.  Schmanke won when Shepherd turned on the red light. Gillespie beat Bachand, Green won when Theofelis red lit, Arthur beat a slowing Harland, and McKillop won when Collecchi was a no show.

About two hours later we got to round two. Petitt beat Schmanke in a double red-light affair, Green used a holeshot to beat Gillespie. McKinney won on double breakout race, but Arthur had already turned on the red light, and McKillop got the bye into the semi’s.

The sun was getting really close to the tree line and we started the semifinals.  Green forced McKillop to break out and Petitt won when McKinney fouled out.

OK now the sun was almost gone. Green and Petitt staged up. They were off, both green, lights were close.  Green ran 8.906 to force Petitt to break out with an 8.882. First race of the season was in the books. Green has started on the way to take back the championship.

Thanks to Delta Camshaft for their sponsorship. Way to go Dale Green.

A nice BBQ and awards ceremony was held at the Association trailer.

On to Sunday. This race was sponsored by Stroh’s Automotive. It was decided by the track to only have one qualifying pass for all classes due to the huge car count.

We had fourteen racers again. Dale Green, Darral Petitt, Diane Petitt, Emmett McKillop, Josh Schmanke, John Theofelis, Mark Gillespie, Tony Arthur, Dave Thornton, Tom Bachand, Nick Shepherd, Alan Harland, Brent McKinney, and Ross Souza.

Dave Thornton was top qualifier with an 8.915. Snap On tools provided the #1 Qualifier Award.

Round one started a whole lot earlier than it did on Saturday. Gillespie beat a breaking out Schmanke. Diane Petitt ran a stellar 8.900 to overcome McKinney, Shepherd beat the reigning champion, who turned on the red light. Souza beat the #1 qualifier, Thornton. Arthur beat Harland, Darral Petitt used a hole shot to beat Bachand, and Theofelis won when Green turned on the red light.

In round two, Darral Petitt hole shot Gillespie for the win, Theofelis hole shot Diane Petitt Shepherd forced Arthur to break out and Souza got the bye.

Semi final time. Shepherd won when Souza went .001 red, and Petitt won with another hole shot over Theofelis.

The final was much earlier, but it was starting to really cool down.  In a double break out race, Shepherd went 8.887 to run closer than Petitt’s 8.876 for the win.

Two races down and eleven more to go. Nice win Nick Shepherd and big shout out to Stroh’s Automotive for the race sponsorship.

Next race is Renegade Raceway. May 26 and 27.
